My training is in philosophy and psychotherapy. I have a Vancouver psychotherapy practice focusing on psychoanalytic therapy. I also teach sessionally in the philosophy department at the University of British Columbia.

Why Psychotherapy?

I am Vancouver therapist specializing in medium- to long-term psychoanalytically-oriented therapy. Some people I see enter therapy at a time of a crisis which has been building for a long time. Others come with the aim of talking about specific issues – such as anxiety, early childhood issues, identity, trauma, loss, or depression. And, some people I see are simply seeking to gain insight and self-knowledge through the process of psychotherapy.

“Analysis can have as its goal only the advent of true speech and the subject’s realisation of his history in its relation to a future.” — Jacques Lacan

Psychoanalytic Therapy

I approach the practice of individual psychotherapy primarily from a psychoanalytic point of view, drawing on elements from classical, Lacanian, and contemporary psychoanalysis. This is an approach that enables one to take the time needed to explore oneself and pursue answers to one’s questions – and in some cases to find new and creative ways of formulating these very questions.

The psychoanalytic approach relies on discretion and confidentiality. It often appeals to those who have curiosity about themselves and their experience of others – including close relations in the present or from the past, authority figures, and society at large.

In an age in which we are used to immediate gratification, and expect supposed “quick fixes,” this approach enables one to take time to step back and examine oneself. It gives one the opportunity to explore one’s identity thoroughly, and to seek out the root causes of complex symptoms and unsatisfying patterns in one’s life and relationships that have gradually come to be over a period of many years.

Therapy Practice

Please feel free to contact me if you are thinking of beginning psychotherapy or would like further Vancouver psychotherapy resources. I will let you know whether I think I can be of help. If not, I will do my best to provide you with a suitable referral.

Research

My research interests include philosophy of psychoanalysis, aesthetics, Kant, and Buddhist and Indian philosophy. I am interested in how philosophy and psychotherapy can inform one another, yielding broader conceptions of each field.

I have published in the British Journal of Aesthetics and Philosophical Review; I am currently working on projects relating to Kant’s aesthetic theory, and Freud’s writings on psychoanalysis and civilization.
